Biography and History

John Lumby Clifton

(Obituary)

John Lumby Clifton was born at Donington, Lincolnshire, England, March 21, 1821, and died June 2, 1904, aged 83 years, 2 months, 12 days.

He came to America in 1852 and settled in Sandusky County OH where he engaged in the meat market business. In the same year, he was married to Elizabeth Burnham, who departed this life September 22, 1898. To this union were born nine children; three sons and six daughters, two daughters dying in infancy.

He moved from Sandusky County to Wood County in 1860, where he commenced farm life with a capitol of $20. From there he moved to Henry County in 1877 and settled on the farm where he has since resided. Funeral services were held from the U.B. church conducted by the pastor, Revered G.H. Wolcott. Burial in the Kline cemetery. A very large congregation gathered to pay their last respects to their neighbor and friend.

Elizabeth Burnham Clifton

(Obituary)

Clifton: Died, Thursday morning, September 22, 1898, at her home in Freedom township, Henry County OH, Mrs. J. L. Clifton, after an illness of over two years. She passed peacefully and gently away surrounded by her family, to whom her loss is doubly sad.

Elizabeth L. Burnham was born in Wisbeck, England, August 16, 1830, and was 68 years, 1 month and 6 days old. She came to America in 1852, and was married to J. L. Clifton in 1856. She was the mother of nine children, two dying in infancy. She leaves an aged husband, seven children, fourteen grandchildren, four brothers and one sister, with many other relatives and friends to mourn her demise. Mother Clifton was a kind neighbor, respected by all who knew her. The remains were followed to the cemetery by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. Mrs. Clifton's former home was near Bowling Green, Wood County, where she resided for over twenty years.

William David Clifton

William David Clifton was born and lived all his life in Fulton County Ohio. He married Emma Aletha Gasche in 1892, and they became the parents of five children, all of whom lived to old age. He was engaged in farming most of his life. 

The children were: 

John Lowell Clifton, born April 02, 1893; married Florence Fauble; died April 02, 1978

Mabel June Clifton, born June 17, 1894; married Frank Lawrence Estel; died July 27, 1985

Harold G. Clifton, born June 01, 1897; married Marjorie Holton; died February 09, 1954

Margerie Clifton, born August 07, 1898; married Kenneth Vaughan; died March 14, 1986

Helen Clifton, born October 16, 1904; married Andrew Rasmussen; died March 1987
